When I made this photo, I focused less on detail and more on simplicity. Photographers often aim to show everything: the face, the clothing, the setting, and every texture. In this shot, I chose the opposite. I allowed the roofer to become a dark silhouette against the bright sun because I wanted shape, not detail, to tell the story.

What made the image effective for me was the worker’s outline. He’s standing on the roofline with one knee bent, leaning slightly forward, with a tool hanging at his side. I didn’t need facial features or extra background details to understand what was happening. His posture conveyed enough. It showed a person at work, elevated, exposed, and physically engaged. That’s something I try to remember when I shoot: gesture and contour can often say more, and say it faster, than detail ever could.

I make a lot of photos at the Highlands wetlands. Frog Fridays, egrets, hawks, lilies, and sunsets all ask something different of me. They require patience and timing. They also demand attention and a real consciousness of craft. This image did too, even though it began as something simple. It started as an iPhone panorama, shot and fully edited on the phone.

What caught my attention here wasn’t just the color. Even so, it’s impossible to overlook. I know photographers are often cautioned about saturation, and that warning is justified. Too much can flatten a scene and make it seem fake. But I believe this photograph works because the structure was established first. The composition was already doing its job before the greens deepened or the sky turned rich with blues and purples.

When I built the frame, I was responding to how the wetland enclosed itself. Trees rose on both sides like pillars. Grasses clustered at the water’s edge. I’ve made a lot of photographs of the work on this bridge over the course of the East of Africa project, from the first tree clearing along the creek bank to the flooding and winter weather that pushed progress back for months. That sequence has value as a record of how the site changed over time. But I knew that once the culvert was set into the gnawed-out channel of Alkyre Run, the picture could become something more than documentation. At that point, the visual contrast was fully in place: this hard concrete insertion pressing against the weathered barns and open ground of the farm beside it.

Precast concrete culvert and panels were lowered into place with a crane next to a gravel-covered road, its surface compacted over the historic culvert that has supported tractors, planters, combines, and wagons for generations of farmers whose farmers’ market delighted residents with fresh produce, hay rides, and pumpkin patches. All that remains is the land, reduced to farming to maintain agricultural taxes, and the buildings now used for storage instead of sillage.

That contrast is what gives the image its emotional pull for me. The farm is not just background. It is a familiar local landmark, one of those places that helps define this part of the city in people’s minds. Seeing it side by side with the new bridge structure makes the larger change harder to treat as an abstraction. The development is no longer just a plan, a permit, or a promise of future growth. It has taken physical form, and in doing so, it has begun to remove this eighty-eight-acre property from its agricultural identity and fold it into something else.

What interested me most in making the photograph was the closeness of those two worlds. On one side is excavation, concrete, machinery, and the straight, imposed geometry of infrastructure. On the other is grass, barns, and the looser, accumulated order of an old working farm. The image works because those conditions have not yet been separated by time or distance. They are both present at once, pressed tightly together in the same frame.

The bridge itself becomes the clearest expression of that change. It is meant as a crossing, but visually it also acts as a dividing line. It marks the point where a long-familiar landscape begins to be reorganized around a different use and a different future. For me, that is where the photograph gets its force. It is not just a picture of construction. It is a picture of farmland in the process of being surrounded, redefined, and, ultimately, lost.

Golden hour gets a lot of attention, but this winter scene reminded me that low light can do more than make a place look nice. It can give a photograph shape, mood, and a real sense of life.

When the sun came up, it lit the red brick, pale siding, and white barn against that deep blue sky, and that was the moment that grabbed me. The snow was still cold and bright, but the buildings seemed to warm up in the light. I felt like I was looking at something brief that would be gone if I waited too long, and that made me want to photograph it.

This is also a place everyone in the city knows. It is familiar, almost ordinary in that way. What moved me was seeing it become something else by getting there early and really paying attention to the light. The buildings had not changed, but the morning made them feel transformed. That was part of what I wanted to hold onto.

I didn’t want to focus on just one building because what I liked was the way the whole place felt together. Keeping the house, shed, barn, and outbuilding in the frame made it feel more honest to me, more like the experience of actually standing there. The long shadows across the snow helped pull it together by adding texture and giving the scene some movement.

I also spent time figuring out where to stand. I moved around until the spacing felt right and each building had room without feeling disconnected. I even placed my own shadow inside the shadow of the tree at the center of the frame, so I could be present in the picture without distracting from it. That detail matters to me because it says something about how I was thinking while making the image. I was not just looking at the scene. I was trying to enter it carefully.

The color was a big part of it too. The red brick and red outbuilding play off each other, and the cream-colored buildings and blue sky keep everything balanced. Even with all the snow, the photograph does not feel cold to me. It feels calm and alive at the same time.

The silhouette is what makes the image take hold so quickly. The trees, the shed, and the slope all fall into shadow, while the sky behind them stays pale and bright. That choice strips the frame down to what matters. We are not distracted by texture or pulled into small descriptive details. We read the image through shape, spacing, and the tension between dark and light. It is a reminder that when a scene feels too full, reduction is often what gives it force.

The deer is small, and that smallness matters. It does not feel staged or presented. It feels simply noticed. Photographers often try to clean up a portrait too much. We look for flattering light, smooth backgrounds, neat clothing, and polished surroundings. This image moves in the opposite direction, and that is exactly why it works. The portrait succeeds because it does not hide the labor. It lets it remain visible.

When I see a winter scene like this, I take my time before picking up the camera. Snow makes things look simple, but it also shows any mistakes. There’s no way to hide poor composition or bad lighting. My first step is to pause and look for structure. Here, the trees form the backbone of the photo.
