Before. Now. After.
Trying to stay relevant in a world where relevancy has little power and meaning, where only the moment counts.
There is no before. No after. There is only now.
The only relevancy is the moment.
The moment of instant gratification. Of social media power.
News photographers are caught in this paradox of the immediacy of an experience and the fleeting nature of digital interactions. News photographers must find the balance between embracing the 'now' while retaining a sense of continuity and depth.
Storytelling is perhaps the greatest challenge in this rapidly changing landscape.
I often tell people to wait three days after a major news event before trying to figure out what happened. Photographers don’t have that luxury. There isn’t waiting.
The photos made today will still be as powerful in three days, or a week, or months, or years. Our perspective on them may change but the photos don’t.
Make your photos the story. The story of the moment. The story of before. The story of after.
