Great! The Weather's Bad!
Only news photographers are filled with glee at the forecast of bad weather. Often asked what I do when the weather is bad. Same thing I do when anything is bad. I make a photo of it.
I’ve made photos in every weather condition possible other than some extreme conditions such as the eye of a hurricane or a sandstorm. Been in tornados - at the edge - hurricanes - at the edge - and blizzards - not at the edge.
Waded through chest-high water for a photograph. Walked backward into the rain and wind for a photograph. Barfed over the side of a boat for a photograph. Dug myself into a snowbank to make a photograph.
A warrior mentality is important to be a news photographer-really any photographer - and not just for weather conditions.
The warrior mindset is a state of mind that allows you to face challenges and adversity with courage, with strength, and with determination. The mind of a photo warrior is always focused on getting the photo no matter the difficulty. Every moment, every decision is made to achieve that goal.
Every assignment, every feature, and every photo opportunity does not have a failure option. There aren’t any excuses that would be accepted.
“The light wasn’t right.”
“There weren’t enough people.”
“There were too many people.”
Don’t even think of an excuse. None will be sufficient. Just make the photo.
