This challenge ends the week with what is probably the most difficult assignment for photographers trying to learn new skills - people.
A portrait is more than just physical features. It's about capturing the spark that makes each person unique. Engage with your subjects, listen to their stories, and let their personalities shine through. A genuine smile, a thoughtful frown, a mischievous twinkle – these details breathe life into your photographs.
Getting emotionally close to a subject with an understanding tone and posture is the quickest method for making photos of people who you want to be your subjects. You don’t need to explain what you're doing, that you're on day 7 of a 29-day challenge to make better photographs. The portrait is not about you. It’s about them. Talk with them. Let them tell you the story they want.
What you’re trying to do is let the subject know that they are important. Their story is interesting and making their photograph in the great light that accentuates and complements their face, clothes, stance, smile, eyes, hair, place in the world, or whatever is what’s important.
Don’t ask to make their photo. Tell them what’s important about them at this moment and you’re going to make a photo of that because it’s important not to let the moment get away without a visual record.
This is not just about building your portfolio. It’s about learning to know people. to listen to people and appreciate their stories. Then find a way to make a photo that tells that story. This challenge is an opportunity to celebrate people.
