Photography often celebrates fleeting moments and grand spectacles. But there's beauty to be found in the seemingly ordinary, our daily routines. Day 17 of our photo challenge explores this often-overlooked subject, encouraging you to make photos of the rhythm and rituals that define someone's day.
Beyond the surface, daily routines have a unique charm. The pouring of morning coffee, a well-worn path through a park, shared laughter between friends, serious conversations at dinner – these seemingly mundane acts, when captured with a photographer’s eye, can reveal a deeper story about the person and their life.
Planning your photos involves choosing subjects close to you, someone whose routine you can easily observe. Select someone willing to have you spend time with them. Long enough to both learn their patterns so you can have a better choice of action ideas and to get them to the point that they forget you’re there. that you become invisible to them and their set of tasks.
This is a valuable skill set to have. It comes by communicating with the subject. Communication that shows they are the most important part of what you are doing. that their work is important and worth being seen by your viewers.
Get your subject comfortable with your presence so the conversation becomes casual, that your position in their space is permissible, and that you aren’t the distraction.
Remember, routines are not static entities. Look for variations within the everyday moments. Capturing subtle changes adds dynamism.
Stringing together individual photographs, you create a visual narrative that transcends mere documentation. Your photos become a story about the person, their habits, and the world they live in. It's a reminder that even the ordinary moments hold beauty and significance, waiting to be revealed by a photographer.
So, step out, observe, and capture the symphony of your subject’s daily life. You might be surprised by the richness and stories you discover within the seemingly ordinary routines.
